– President BARACK OBAMA, during a press conference to announce that all women will have preventive care, including contraceptive services, regardless of where she works — even if working for a faith-based group. Something tells me this won’t be enough for the Catholic Church. (via inothernews)

SkillShare.com is giving away $5,000 to help pay... →
The Project on Student Debt recently reported that, on average, a graduating member of the class of 2010 had $25,250 in debt (and the average amount of student debt is up 5 percent from 2009). For this reason, we’re giving away $5,000 worth of relief to help someone pay off their student loans. “It’s clear education needs to transform, which is why Skillshare’s mission is to democratize...

Unemployment Diary, Day 23: FINALLY.
Got the amended benefit notice today. I seriously think that guy on the phone last week lied to me when he said they hadn’t received the information from the fed yet. It just felt fishy.  Also, if you ever need to contact EDD, do not, I repeat, DO NOT bother with the phone. It’s a joke.  Use the email service on the website - they actually respond, generally within 24 hours.  Color me...

Unemployment Diary, Day 22: What is it about being...
…that makes you feel like you are a worthless, talentless, forgettable waste of air? Ugh. I hate life today. I still have not received an updated UI claim with my federal employment information on it. (That’s right, I actually worked for the federal government for the last year.) Nor have I received confirmation as to whether or not the asshat from the phone last week has approved my...

On why it's okay to feel your feelings.
dearcoketalk: Dear Coquette, Whenever I work hard for something and succeed, I feel like I don’t deserve it. It took a lot of work to even accept that this reaction is irrational, but how do I let go of that feeling completely? By all means, work hard and succeed. That’s great. Just don’t get caught up in whether you deserve success or not, because guess what? You don’t. No one deserves...

THE NATURAL VEGANISM OF HUMAN BABIES
In response to this post by unknowablewoman… God she’s brilliant. desliz: FACT: Babies will not kill and eat rabbits with their bare hands, even when they have a home turf advantage. FACT: If you lock a baby and a cat and some strawberries in a box and shake it*, the baby will always choose to eat the strawberries first. FACT: Babies only need to drink milk because their moral...

unknowablewoman: desliz: saltmarshhag: zincfingers: hate-wizard: I’m an organ donor. I also am somewhere in between vegan and vegetarian. I see a contradiction in this. This means that if I die, any of my usable organs will be harvested and transplanted into another human being, if possible. However, the odds of any of the recipients being vegan or vegetarian is very small.  ...

Mitt Romney doesn't care if you're unemployed
Perhaps you heard the absurd claim that GOP presidential-hopeful Mitt Romney made recently on national television: “I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there.” Paul Krugman has something to say about that: [H]ow could a candidate declare that safety-net programs do no good and declare only 10 days later that those programs take such good care of the poor that he...

Unemployment Diary, Day 17: In other news, people...
Thanks for making me feel like shit, telephone guy, for being irritated that I was upset and crying after you implied I might not qualify for benefits since I “knew my position was temporary” when I took it, despite the fact that I’ve been gainfully employed for the past nine months. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
